The Book of Five Rings (2022), originally written in 1643 by Musashi Miyamoto—an accomplished Japanese swordsman, strategist, writer, and artist—was composed on a traditional scroll. My goal was to reinterpret his work, transforming it into a captivating object. Miyamoto’s writings, which delve into strategies and keen observations, inspired me to create a multi-layered folder book that parallels the armor of a Japanese swordsman. Each chapter is encased in a protective shell, preserving Miyamoto's continuous manuscript, evoking the feel of an endless scroll. The entire book is bound together by five grommets that mirror the title.
